About the Role

Mobile Baykeeper is seeking a Community Engagement Director to lead our efforts in mobilizing communities across Coastal Alabama towards actionable change that positively impacts water quality and community well-being. The ideal candidate will be responsible for driving engagement strategies, fostering relationships with community leaders, and guiding our team in achieving goals related to volunteer mobilization, government relations, and environmental education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Community Engagement Team to mobilize communities across coastal Alabama to actively protect and improve their waters. 30%
  • Drive cultural change within both the community and Baykeeper’s team by building strategies that help people understand the challenges to clean water and take action to overcome them. 15%
  • Develop, maintain, and track written organizing plans that guide community actions toward achieving healthier waters. 15%
  • Build and sustain deep, trusting relationships with diverse community leaders—across race, geography, and socioeconomic background—to drive collective action for cleaner waters. 40%

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of local waterways and challenges they face (or the ability to quickly learn).
  • Storytelling ability, especially connecting to blue-collar and working-class narratives.
  • Ability to operate a watercraft or a strong desire to learn.
