THE OPPORTUNITY

The Fisheries and Marine Institute is currently searching for an innovative and dynamic individual to lead its School of Maritime Studies. The School of Maritime Studies offers undergraduate certificate, diploma, degree, and graduate degree programs along with a well-established portfolio of industrial training and a growing research presence. In addition to its academic programs the School of Maritime Studies is comprised of several centers including the Offshore Safety and Survival Center, Safety and Emergency Response Training Center, Center for Marine Simulation, and the Ocean Safety Research Unit.

THE CANDIDATE

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Academic and Student Affairs), Marine Institute, the Head of the School of Maritime Studies is a senior leadership position within the Fisheries and Marine Institute and Memorial University. This position will be responsible for the development of a future vision, strategic direction and the day-to-day leadership of academic programs, research and industry partnerships for the school. This will include the development and implementation of the associate objectives including financial and resource planning. The successful applicant will develop and maintain relationships with community, industry, academic and government partners to ensure continued effectiveness and efficiency of academic programs and research activities. This position requires an individual with demonstrated leadership abilities such as inclusion, communications, planning and change management with the ability to harness and market the School of Maritime Studies programs and assets. The position requires an individual with extensive knowledge of the local, national, and international maritime sector as well as insight into emerging trends.

The ideal candidate must be a collegial and collaborative professional with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills who can foster a diverse operational and academic environment, solve problems, and think progressively.  This knowledge and experience would be gained through the completion of a graduate degree in a related discipline combined with a minimum of 15 years of maritime industry experience in progressively responsible leadership positions. Maritime certification, ship building experience or experience in maritime education and training (MET) would be considered a strong asset. Applicants with an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
