Funding : Competition Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)
Supervisors : Dr Vincent Onyango, Dr Enrico Tommarchi
About the project :
Due to the advent of containerisation and the emergence of new maritime trade patterns as a result of globalisation, the last decades of the twentieth century have heralded profound processes of port restructuring. In the twenty-first century, ports are once again on the verge of a major transformation as they decarbonise and adapt to climate change. Ports will retain their role as key infrastructure in a world where fossil fuels are being phased out; alongside an urgent call to avoid that global warming above 1.5C. Therefore, it is crucial to understand 1) what future ports will look like, 2) what strategic long-term solutions are inherent and latent in ports, and 3) what kind of impacts their transformation will produce. If we interrogate emerging artificial intelligences about what future ports are going to look like, the result of our interrogation is likely to be a smart port where decarbonised maritime activities blend with the production of renewable energy and with urban uses, including housing and recreation.
This project asks the following questions: how can ports be strategic levers to address the multiplicity of conflicting and competing interests around project activities for climate change and the transition to clean energy? What are the spatial outcomes of the restructuring process resulting from the energy transition?
