About the Future Leaders Council (FLC)
It is the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) vision to place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of our planet. Future Leaders Council (FLC) was created within the NERC governance structure in 2023 to broaden the talent pool available to advise us, while, at the same time, allowing the environmental science leaders of the future to gain valuable committee member experience.
What does the Future Leaders Councils do?
The FLC has a specific remit to advise NERC on the following areas: digital, sustainability, public engagement, diversity and inclusion alongside exposure and advice on the wider strategic questions of the moment. Its responsibilities are:
• providing advice, or being available for consultation, on specific papers or policy areas being considered by NERC Council
• overseeing the development and implementation of NERC’s net zero pathway
• providing advice on the implementation of NERC’s digital strategy and use of digital approaches across NERC’s portfolio
• direct funding governance oversight of a £1.5 million sustainability themed funding line, including spend for diversity and inclusion enrichment activity, where the FLC will make recommendations on programme spend to the NERC Executive
• providing challenge and oversight of plans for delivery against the current NERC Public Engagement strategy and development of future PE strategies
• acting as NERC advocates within their community and beyond and sharing with NERC perceptions and insight from the community
About the Role
We want to recruit members for the FLC from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, whether that is from business including small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), from groups representing wider society or from other disciplines with a cross over to environmental science. We would also like to see applications for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, with unconventional career paths and/ or from groups that are under-represented in the environmental science sector.
Expertise
The FLC is looking for applications from people from both academic and non-academic backgrounds who have experience in either of the following areas:
- digital transformation
- sustainability (including supply chain sustainability)
Aptitude
Applicants should have a strong desire to become future board and committee members and need to be committed to investing their time to develop the knowledge and experience to achieve this goal, including guiding NERC on the sort of training, support and mentoring that may assist them and ensure the FLC is successful.
Experience
We are seeking individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences and from groups that are underrepresented in the environmental science sector. This includes people who have had an unconventional career path, from business, including small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), from groups representing wider society or from other disciplines with a cross over to environmental science. We will aim to ensure balance within the group with individual members bringing different experiences, contributions and perspectives to the group.
All applications must be received by 16:00 on Tuesday 17th September 2024.
