This is a brand-new role which represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced researcher looking for an interesting and challenging permanent scientific position in the field of marine mammal telemetry. The successful applicant will acquire an in-depth understanding of SMRU-IG instrumentation including sensors, hardware, data collection, data processing, data interpretation, and an appreciation of the constraints and trade-offs that tag design requires. They will act as an interface.

between SMRU-IG’s engineering team and the research community to help translate the users’ research questions into tag functionality and help shape and implement development plans. This role will involve collaborative discussion with customers from a broad range of disciplines. The successful applicant will be able to advise on data processing, and visualisation. There may also be opportunities to input into data analyses and interpretation and where appropriate, to co-author resulting publications. There will be scope to play an important role in the continued development of new designs, approaches and areas of endeavour. There may also be scope to follow areas of their own research interest in the field of marine mammal telemetry. This role has the potential to grow over time into a more senior role, playing a major role in shaping the future strategy of SMRUIG and SMRU telemetry research. Regular travel to conferences to represent SMRU-IG will also be part of this role.
