Become a part of a team of amazing informal educators with MarineQuest. Our instructors come from a variety of marine science and education backgrounds. Instructors implement a marine science curriculum developed by MarineQuest and collaborating experts.
Expectations of program instructors:
- Learn and implement a program-specific curriculum for the student age group you are hired to lead.
- Manage time to meet the program's scheduled agenda expectations.
- Provide hands-on, experiential, science instruction for students.
- Supervise students in the classroom, university lab spaces, field, and during transportation and meal times.
- Work cooperatively with co-instructor, other MarineQuest instructors, and specialty staff.
- Provide first aid to students.
- Implement behavior management policies.
- Some positions require instructors to drive passenger vans.
Qualifications:
- Must be able to lead and participate in outdoor learning experiences (rain or shine, temperatures over 80 degrees).
- Must have strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, co-workers, other university staff, and the general public.
- Must demonstrate initiative and leadership qualities.
- Must have previous experience and desire to work with youth.
- Preference is given to candidates in (or have completed) a degree program related to marine sciences or environmental education.
- Knowledge of local marine habitats is a plus.
- CPR/First Aid is required.
- Lifeguard Certification is preferred and in some cases required.
Expected work hours:
- Half day: Monday - Friday 7:15am - 12:15pm
- Full day: Monday - Thursday 7:15am - 4:30pm, & Friday 7:15am- 1:00pm.
- Weekend: Friday 3:15pm - 9:30pm, Saturday & Sunday 7:00am - 9:30pm
Terms of Employment:
- Must be available June 2 - July 25 or August 8, 2025.
- The pay rate ranges from $12 - $18 and depends on qualifications (UNCW-approved pay calculator).
