The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

This important role supports the delivery of key elements of the FEAS work plan and will be based at the MI research facility in Furnace, Newport, Co. Mayo. The role will involve the main day to day support for the research and monitoring activities based in Newport and Lehanagh Pool (Bertraghboy Bay), including aquaculture, catchment monitoring and monitoring of fish stocks, both in the traps in Newport and in other projects as assigned (such as marine telemetry of fish). A key part of this role is to provide backup support in Newport for other technical staff, when they are assigned to duties off-site (e.g. Lehanagh Pool, off-shore telemetry), and to provide support to MI Facilities with an onsite presence for ongoing co-ordination of contracts and services, site maintenance and health and safety.
