The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

The Marine Institute is mainly involved in ocean modelling tasks in the ECOCREDIT, WFD Futures and BIODIVER-COAST 2 projects and your role will be to provide ocean modelling tasks in these projects in collaboration with project partners. These tasks will include carrying out simulations tailored to the projects needs using the existing coupled physical-biogeochemical models of the coastal environments of Galway Bay and Dublin Bay. The role also involves adoption of the existing Marine Institute’s DEB model for Mytilus edulis to represent the physiology of Ostrea edulis and carrying out DEB-BGC simulations for Galway Bay as part of ECOCREDIT. In WFD Futures project you will run time slice climate projections to examine changes in biogeochemical cycling in Galway and Dublin Bays in the future climate. BIODIVER-COAST 2 tasks mainly involve the analysis of the existing model outputs with the aim to develop tailored services for aquaculture, oyster restoration and environmental monitoring.
