Marine Institute
Organisation Description:
The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.
Summary of the Role:
You will work within the Fisheries Ecosystems Advisory Services (FEAS) in the Marine Institute in the Shellfish and Environment inshore fisheries team specialising in the stock assessment of shellfish including bivalve molluscs, whelks and crustaceans and in evaluating the effects of fishing on marine protected areas (Special Areas of Conservation and Special Protection Areas) including effects on marine mammals, seabirds and benthic habitats. The team produces annual advice on the management of shellfish stocks based on a field programme that includes research surveys at sea, port sampling, observer work at sea, stock assessments and habitat surveys and assessments. The team is also involved in a number of projects that support the advice, including restoration of oysters, assessing by-catch in set net fisheries, transitioning high-impact to low-impact fisheries, acoustic telemetry of endangered elasmobranchs that are at risk of by-catch and deployment of vessel monitoring systems on inshore fishing vessels.
