Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

This important role supports our organisation in delivery of its essential work programmes. This role provides candidates with the opportunity to work in a diverse organisation which invests in and celebrates its people. The laboratory analyst will primarily be responsible for undertaking analysis of environmental contaminants in seafood and other environmental matrices, contributing to monitoring programmes and research initiatives. The data produced support assessments of progress towards national and international goals of clean seas and safe seafood.

The primary analytical techniques used may include Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS), Cold Vapour Atomic Fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) and other chromatography and hyphenated mass-spectrometry techniques such as Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). This will also involve analytical method development and validation, and field sampling from time to time, for example, sampling from coastal areas and potentially participating in surveys on board research vessels.
