The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.
Summary of the Role:
The successful candidate will work with the team of people in the Marine Institute in Furnace, Newport, who are running a captive breeding programme for Freshwater Pearl Mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) in collaboration with the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Freshwater Pearl Mussel is protected under the Wildlife Act and listed on Annex II and V of the EU Habitats Directive. It is on the verge of extinction, in unfavourable bad conservation status and categorised as critically endangered in Ireland, and one of the 365 most endangered species in the world.

Educational and Professional Requirements:
• Minimum of a certificate in a relevant subject (biology, aquaculture, ecology, zoology)
• Relevant technical experience in an aquaculture facility, field station or fish biology laboratory
• Scientific and Technical Report Writing
• Industrious, decisive, have a proven ability to use his/her own initiative while at the same time working well as a team player
• Effective communication skills
• Relevant I.T. skills
• A full driving licence
