Organisation Description:

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

The Scientific Technical Officer (STO) will work closely with the project manager in the Fisheries Ecosystem Advisory Services team, as well as with colleagues in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management team. The will also work with international project partners within the BioProtect project, and particularly the University of Galway (UoG) to deliver research for the BioProtect project. In the BioProtect project the role will be to help develop and propose a coherent, connected network of MPAs, robust to climate change, at local, regional and basin scale so that plans at one scale are still relevant at a smaller or larger scale. This will be done in collaboration with UoG. There are also plans to develop assessment of ORE infrastructures off the Irish Coast, and the impacts these structures may have on marine biodiversity and how these will affect the marine ecosystem and current activities in the area, which is presently not understood. The role will work to develop a better understanding of these challenges, and collaborate closely with local and national stakeholders in the context of area based management to protect marine biodiversity What will be demonstrated in the project and the Irish waters case study?

  • How a nested approach to connect marine protection measures across various spatial scales, from basin to regional and local scale can be applied to areas where data and resource availability range from good to poor.
  • Methods on how to conduct public participatory mapping and co-design protection measures, ensuring stakeholder buy-in the management of MPAs.
  • How ecosystem models can be used to understand changes in marine biodiversity under different scenarios, including climate change, MPAs and ORE.
  • This will inform how socio-economic activity, particularly fishing, may change under certain scenarios and can inform marine management plans

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • A relevant degree in a fisheries science, renewable resource management, marine science or related field, with at least one year of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of working with biological analyses in the marine ecosystem or fishery fields. This could include work on stakeholder engagement; ecosystem modelling, understanding ecosystem drivers of change, fisheries assessment and analysis; human pressures on marine ecosystems, effects of climate change on marine ecosystems; ecosystem data analysis and mapping; governance evaluation etc. Experience is not required in all of these, and expertise in similar or related fields will be considered. The main factor is experience in analytical biology in a marine fishery, ecosystem and social context.
  • Experience of working with stakeholders.
  • Evidence of working in a relevant multi-disciplinary context. Ideally, this would be in the cross over between biological, ecological and socioeconomic sustainability, but other experience will be considered.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with and effectively communicate with the fishing Industry and stakeholders.
  • High level of experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • High level statistical analysis skills (ideally implemented in R).
  • Proven Scientific Report and peer reviewed paper writing skills.
  • Effective organisation and administration skills.
  • Good time management and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
