The Teichberg lab at the MBL seeks a highly motivated individual to join The Ecosystems Center as a full-time Research Assistant I for 12 months to assist with ongoing research projects in seagrass ecology, conservation, and restoration. The successful candidate will help carry out seagrass surveys and environmental sample collections in the field within coastal and estuarine seagrass habitats. Tasks will also include processing of environmental samples in the laboratory, helping to maintain seagrass cultures, and setting up flow-through seawater tank experiments in the Marine Resource Center. Some time may be allocated to assist with our educational programs and co-mentoring student project.

Basic Qualifications:

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Marine Biology or Environmental Science, as well as some working experience with seagrass ecology. Strong field skills required, including operating small boats and snorkeling, and knowledge of methods for sampling of water, sediment, and marine organisms in coastal and estuarine environments. Laboratory skills in measuring seagrass morphological traits, water and sediment nutrient analyses, maintenance of plant/algal cultures, and general knowledge of use of laboratory equipment preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience as a teaching assistant and with mentoring students and must be able to work independently and in a team.

Physical Requirements:

Field work in aquatic environments is necessary and will include carrying heavy/bulky field equipment and samples to and from sites. Swimming, snorkeling, and/or wading in shallow water will also be required for field work. Driving of MBL vehicles and operation of small boats necessary. Some tasks will also take place in a wet-lab environment setting up large tanks in the Marine Resources Center.
