Position Overview

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) seeks a motivated and creative Summer Intern to support both the Development and Communications teams. This role offers hands-on experience in nonprofit fundraising, storytelling, digital communications, and campus engagement.

The intern will contribute to a variety of projects, including database management, content creation, photography, and social media. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in nonprofit development, science communications, or public relations.

Key Responsibilities

Development Support

  • Assist with maintaining and updating donor databases
  • Support data entry, cleanup, and reporting projects
  • Help prepare materials for fundraising campaigns and donor outreach

Communications & Creative Support

  • Capture photos and visual content across the MBL campus
  • Create graphics and marketing materials using Canva
  • Assist in drafting content for newsletters, website updates, and internal communications
  • Support email marketing efforts using platforms such as Mailchimp and Constant Contact

Social Media & Public Relations

  • Assist in creating and scheduling content for platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn
  • Monitor social media engagement.
  • Track media coverage, industry news, and organizational mentions
  • Assist with drafting posts, captions, and promotional materials

Administrative & General Support

  • Update media and contact lists
  • Assist both the Development and Communications teams with ongoing projects
  • Provide general administrative support as needed

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Current student or recent graduate in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Development, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (familiarity with AP Style is a plus)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and basic content scheduling tools
  • Experience with Canva or other design tools (Adobe Creative Suite is a plus)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple tasks
  • Creative mindset with a willingness to learn
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
