Postdoctoral Scientist – Marine microbial ecology and evolution

Marine Biological Laboratory | Woods Hole, MA | Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

Description:

Microbes play fundamental roles in all ocean ecology. Our primary focus is on eukaryotic phytoplankton, and variations in the communities of bacteria, archaea and heterotrophic eukaryotes, as well as viruses, that accompany different phytoplankton taxa. To investigate these complex systems, we use high throughput DNA/RNA sequencing and proteomics on populations in nature and experimental systems. In this way, we study the genetics and biological responses of important primary producers and of microbes with which they interact. Analysis of these data in an integrative manner, including physiological characterization, has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of these microbes and novel functions.

We are seeking a post-doctoral scientist to analysis of ocean-based experiments and to perform at-sea experimentation. The project focuses on interactions between microbes at the biochemical level and the degradation of algal biomass. Ultimate goals are to refine our understanding of phytoplankton communities and forces regulating relative contributions to carbon fixation, export, and processing in the deep sea.

Qualifications:

We are looking for an outstanding individual with demonstrated interest in working at the interface between evolutionary and biological sciences. This individual should have both seagoing and bioinformatic skills, and be a strong team-player with excellent communication skills. An interest in developing knowledge of marine microbial populations and ecology is essential, if not already a developed knowledge area. We will offer an attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a biological or computational field.

Term

The appointment will be for two years with extension possible depending on performance, ideally beginning December 2025.
