REPORTS TO: Manager of Cephalopod Operations

JOB SUMMARY:

Coordinate operational activities related to MBL’s cephalopod initiative including oversight of multiple cephalopod cultures and maintaining aquatic systems. Assist with developing and implementing appropriate standard operating procedures with program staff and animals. Work toward advancing revolutionary cephalopod culture and animal care techniques. Supervise and train co-op interns, volunteers, and technicians. Facilitate intern, volunteer, and technician professional development through training and directed research that will assist MBL’s cephalopod initiative overarching goals. Works with other departments in the promotion of the initiative through public outreach, education, and conferences/workshops. Assists the Manager of Cephalopod Operations with scheduling, evaluation and hiring of new staff and interns.

MAJOR DUTIES:

· Design and build open and closed cephalopod systems.

· Maintain multiple cephalopod cultures and develop new culture techniques.

· Act as team leader to co-op interns, volunteers, and technicians.

· Assume responsibility for all cephalopod husbandry and ensure that all staff are properly trained and equipped for their assigned tasks.

· Supervise medical treatments, transport, accession and deaccession of animals.

· Lead field collection missions targeting cephalopod food and tank décor.

· Assist Manager of Cephalopod Operations in setting performance standards for staff.

· Assign and check work, set deadlines and delegate co-op and intern responsibilities within the operational framework of the cephalopod initiative.

· Implementing and monitoring water quality monitoring devices.

· 24/7 monitoring of water parameters pumps, heaters and life support components.

· Respond to animal care emergencies and system alarms.

· Diagnosis of disease and pathogens, implementing proper treatment.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

· Ability to supervise and direct multiple staff.

· Excellent communication (oral and written) skills and attention to detail.

· Excellent data management skills.

· Excellent working in teams.

· Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

· Proficient knowledge of cephalopod life cycle and species natural history.

· Excellent working knowledge of life support operation and water quality control for maintaining open and closed marine systems.

· System fabrication and plumbing experience.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

· Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related fields.

· Experience working with 4+ cephalopod species in laboratory or aquaria.

· Experience culturing 2+ species of cephalopod.

· Minimum of 5 years working with cephalopods in captivity.

· Experience with live food collection and culture.

· Proven track record of laboratory work (2 – 3 years).

· Excellent knowledge of cephalopod life support system design, setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

· Experience with science outreach and public speaking.

· Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

· As needed, interact with media, donors, schools and general public on MBL’s behalf.

· Assist Manager of Cephalopod Operations in the development of cephalopod workshops.

· Fosters working relationships with other labs, institutions and aquariums.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 100 feet. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. An employee must also have the ability to travel by car, boat and air as needed, conduct field work in the collection and research of animals, and maintain daily contact with a living collection of animals.
