Position Summary:

The MBL Ecosystems Center seeks a full-time Research Assistant II starting December 2024 and continuing for 18 months to assist with research on biogeochemical transport and processing in coupled watershed-estuary systems recovering from eutrophication. This position will include field and lab work in estuaries fringing the coast of Cape Cod. Funding is available for up to 18 months, with the possibility of extension depending on additional pending support sources.

Specific tasks will be to collect and process surface water and groundwater samples, conduct nutrient analyses, measure phytoplankton and suspended matter concentrations, assist with deploying, downloading and analyzing data from field instruments including current meters, water-level sensors and multiparameter sondes. Experience with spectrophotometry, elemental analysis, and automated nutrient analyzers is helpful. Proficiency in Excel and some experience with R-Programming or MatLab is necessary. The successful applicant should also be willing to help with basic preparations for field work such as organizing, cleaning and maintaining gear and small boats.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree and 3 years of successful directly related lab experience – or – a Master of Science degree in chemistry, biology, geoscience or environmental science plus relevant field and research experience which included some lab experience as an intern. Desire to work in a collaborative environment. Applicant should have a valid drivers license.

Physical Requirements:

Willingness to work in the field during inclement weather, ability to lift 50 lbs, and to swim are required.
