JOB SUMMARY:

The Accountant, Financial Reporting & Compliance is responsible for performing accounting and reporting, including contributions, investments, endowments, annuities, and trusts; assisting with tracking of the monthly closing process and audit checklists tracking; producing interim financial reporting, preparation of the annual financial statement and retirement plan audits schedules, preparation of annual Form 990 and other compliance filings, and administering portions of the financial accounting system.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Basic Qualifications

Performs revenue accounting, including contributions, endowments, investments, annuities, and trusts. Research guidance for the accounting treatment of complex gifts. Reconciles balance sheet accounts and maintains schedules related to investment and endowment accounts.

Assists with tracking the monthly accounting closing, in close coordination with the Manager, Projects & Financial Reporting and Controller. Performs accounting for balance sheet and other general accounting as necessary or assigned.

Produces internal and external financial reporting including reports for management, Board of Trustees and other financial statement users in close coordination with the Manager, Projects & Financial Reporting. Works closely with the Budget Analyst to ensure consistency with budget reporting.

Assists with the annual financial statement audit fieldwork, acting as a key liaison for checklists and tracking of information provided to the auditors. Prepares draft audited financial statements. Provides key support, schedules and reconciliations for financial statement audits, particularly within investments, endowments, and net asset schedules and related financial statement disclosures.

Assists with the annual pension audit and retirement plan valuation fieldwork, acting as a key liaison for checklists and tracking of information provided to the auditors. Reviews schedules and reconciliations for the audits as prepared by payroll and human resources staff. Assists with internal preparation and review of draft retirement plan financial statements and disclosure reporting in close coordination with the Manager, Projects & Financial Reporting.

Prepares tax and financial compliance filings for the institution and its related entities, including but not limited to: IRS Form 990 & 990T, MA Form PC, Forms 5500, Charitable Registrations and other filings as required.

Assists with the preparation of reporting to the US Census Bureau.

Performs administration within financial system (Navision), including managing cost center setups, chart of accounts setup, and other system attributes within Navision.

Takes an active role in developing, implementing, and monitoring financial policies and procedures, and related internal controls impacting financial reporting.

Performs other assignments and tasks as required and requested.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong accounting, tax, financial reporting and analytical skills and experience required. Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Non-profit and sponsored research accounting experience strongly preferred. Experience with financial accounting systems, and advanced spreadsheet knowledge. Ability to integrity check and verify data. Self-directed in learning new procedures and methodologies, particularly around tax and compliance research. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to exercise high levels of confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree required with accounting degree preferred, five or more years accounting and/or analyst experience. Significant and advanced systems and spreadsheet experience required.

Physical Requirements

This position requires sedentary work (exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects). Worker must be able to stand, walk, sit, reach, push, pull, use fingertips, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.

Worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
