Contractor Title: Seasonal Shorebird Survey TechnicianDepartment: Shorebird ConservationReports To: Shorebird Biologist, TexasClassification: Independent ContractorLocation: Chambers County, TXPeriod of Performance: August 10th – October 31st (exact dates negotiable) CONTRACTOR POSITION SUMMARYManomet’s Texas Shorebird Program is seeking a Seasonal Shorebird Technician to monitor shorebirds on the upper coast of Texas for our East Bay Water for Shorebirds initiative. This initiative allocates water to private and public lands in Chambers County, Texas to provide habitat for migrating shorebirds. Properties receiving water are monitored to measure the effects of water delivery on migrating shorebirds. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (SCOPE OF WORK)- Coordinate with Manomet’s Texas Shorebird Biologist to independently conduct bird surveys August through the end of October 2026 in rice fields, cattle pastures, and hunting impoundments.- Identify and count all birds present on project fields, including shorebirds, waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds; help compile data and create reports. PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES- Skilled at identifying mid-continent shorebird species by sight; ability to identify shorebirds in flight and by call is highly competitive.- Experience conducting multi-species avian point counts and working independently in the field recommended.- Must have valid driver’s license; local travel throughout the county is required (reimbursed).- Comfortable interacting with land managers in a rural setting. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS- Ability to work outside for extended periods in hot, humid, and buggy conditions.- Frequent walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.- Fully remote/hybrid remote work possible with extensive travel between survey sites required.
