General areas of responsibility

The scientific objectives of the Biologie et Ecologie des Ecosystèmes marins Profonds (BEEP) joint research unit are to describe and understand the composition, structure and functioning of various deep-sea marine ecosystems by coupling faunistic and microbial studies, from communities to molecules and vice versa, using integrated, multidisciplinary approaches. One of the deep-sea laboratory's objectives is to understand the natural dynamics of these ecosystems and the impacts of anthropogenic activities, in order to inform and propose management and mitigation measures within the framework of environmental management policies.

Since 2011, the laboratory has been involved in seafloor observatories (EMSO-Azores in the Atlantic and Ocean Networks Canada in the northeast Pacific) to study the dynamics of faunal assemblages associated with hydrothermal vents. In this context, the laboratory has developed an observation module, TEMPO, which enables the daily acquisition of video images. Analysis of these images enables us to assess the natural dynamics of communities, and the biology of organisms such as reproduction, growth or interactions between species. This knowledge is essential for assessing the resilience of communities in response to natural or anthropogenic disturbances. However, since the first deployments, the laboratory has accumulated over 7,000h of videos, largely exceeding the processing power of the laboratory. In this context, the "Deep Sea Spy" project has enabled since 2017 the annotation of these images by citizens through an online application (www.deepseaspy.com). Today, over 2,000 participants have annotated 68,000 images, accumulating almost 240,000 annotations referenced in space and time.

The analysis of this dataset will enable the development of a validation protocol for citizen data, in order to create a training dataset for the implementation of machine learning approaches. Ultimately, the aim is to set up a universal workflow from data acquisition to processing and archiving. This contract is part of the ANR project LIFE DEEPER which objective is to reach a better understanding of hydrothermal vent functioning.

Main missions

The candidate will be responsible for the statistical analysis of the annotation dataset acquired as part of the "Deep Sea Spy" project.

He/she will have to set up a validation protocol (agreement thresholds between participants according to species, codes for routine analysis of the dataset).

Make available annotated codes for future analysis.

Writing of a report on methods and results for scientific publication and the public (for the website).

Principal activities

  • Data mining from the Deep Sea Spy database
  • Statistical analysis of citizen data: analyses of variability between participants, analyses of agreement thresholds, analyses of trends in the number and distribution of species over time according to the rate of agreement between participants.
  • The results should enable the establishment of a data validation protocol
  • Writing of a report in English on methods and results for subsequent scientific publication. The candidate will be associated with the paper.
  • Writing of a report for the public for publication on the website and dissemination.

Relational scope

  • Internal :
    • Mainly with the lab team, more specifically with the Deep Sa Spy project coordinator, the imagery engineer, and a post-doc using citizen data
    • The IRSI department regarding database and IT
  • External :
    • Computer Scientis who developed Artificail Intelligence algorithms on the images
    • The program developer of the deep sea spy application
    • External collaborators who have experience in citizen science approaches and data validation

The Institute and the recruiting departement

A pioneer in ocean science, IFREMER’s cutting-edge research is grounded in sustainable development and open science. Our vision is to advance science, expertise and innovation to:

- Protect and restore the ocean

- Sustainably use marine resources to benefit society

- Create and share ocean data, information & knowledge.

With more than 1,500 personnel spread along the French coastline in more than 20 sites, the Institute explores the 3 great oceans: the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A leader in ocean science, IFREMER is managing the French Oceanographic Fleet and its dedicated scientists create ground-breaking technology to push the boundaries of ocean exploration and knowledge, from the abyss to the atmosphere-ocean interface.

Well-established in the international scientific community, our scientists, engineers and technicians are committed to advance knowledge about our planet’s last unexplored frontiers. They provide the science we need for informed decision-making and public policy and they transfer this knowledge and technology to businesses to fulfill public and private needs. Core to our mission is also to strengthen public awareness about the importance of understanding the ocean and its resources, and empowering future generations of leaders through education and outreach national campaigns.

Founded in 1984, IFREMER is a French public organization and its budget approximates 240 million euros. It is operating under the joint authority of the French Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the french Ministry of the Sea, the French Ministry for the Ecological and Solidary Transition, and the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
