Pay Grade: 6 Salary Range: $55,952- $89,440
Starting Salary: $ 60,100 – 75,000

GMRI is seeking applicants for a 2-year full-time Research Associate position to contribute to agent based bioeconomic modeling for the American lobster fishery. The primary duty of the position will be to contribute to a project funded by the NSF Navigating the New Arctic program to develop agent-based bioeconomic model that examines arctic climate change impacts on the American lobster fishery. The candidate should be close to completing Ph.D. in natural resource economics, natural resource modeling, or a related field, with at minimum ABD (All But Dissertation) standing.
The expected start date is August 6, 2024, or later. The position will be located primarily at GMRI (www.gmri.org) in Portland, ME.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of agent-based bioeconomic model of the American lobster fishery.
- Maintain communication and work in collaboration with NSF NNA researchers and stakeholder partners.
- Lead the development of at least two peer-reviewed scientific papers and present findings at industry and scientific conferences.
- Travel to regional stakeholder meetings, project team workshops, and industry and scientific conferences.
- Contribute to proposals to support the second phase of NSF NNA research.
- Participate in NSF NNA project team meetings and stakeholder workshops.
- Participate in lab and GMRI staff meetings and activities.
Required Qualifications:
- ABD in natural resource economics, natural resource modeling, or a relevant discipline.
- Understanding of the American lobster fishery management and socio-cultural and economics conditions of the fishery.
- Demonstrated experience and fluency in relevant programming languages (e.g., R).
- Demonstrated experience in engaging fishery stakeholders and enthusiasm to involve the lobster fishery stakeholders in the development of the agent-based bioeconomic model.
- At least one publication in the peer-reviewed scientific literature on the topic related to this position, including but not limited to American lobster fishery and climate change adaptation.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Eligible to work in the United States
