Position Description: GFA seeks a Part-Time Aviation Partnership Specialist for the Seabird Protection Network, a program of the Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries and Greater Farallones Association. Seabird Protection Network (SPN) aims to protect seabirds from human disturbances, including low-flying aircraft, and has a long history of engaging with California aviators, including civilian aviation groups, airports, flight schools, US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, and other branches of the military. The Aviation Partnership Specialist is responsible for building and maintaining partnerships with civilian and military aviators and airport managers to encourage them to avoid disturbing sensitive seabird colonies while flying. Supervised by the Seabird Protection Network Program Coordinator, this position is ideal for candidates with existing knowledge and familiarity with the California aviation community.

The Aviation Partnership Specialist is Seabird Protection Network’s frontline partnership specialist for civilian pilots who regularly fly the Central California Coast. This includes distributing products, designing and delivering presentations, staying informed about events and other opportunities to reach pilots, visiting existing partners, and building new relationships at flight schools, aviation clubs, airports, and military airfields. The Aviation Partnership Specialist will also work with the SPN team to develop messages, strategies, presentations, and materials. The goal of this work is to provide pilots with the information they need to identify and avoid disturbing seabird colonies while they fly. Duties may change depending on the successful candidate’s skill set.

Job Duties

  • Prepare and give in-person presentations to aviators at flight schools, aviation clubs, military bases, and airports.
  • Build and maintain partnerships within the aviation community. Current priorities for new partnerships include the FAA Safety Team and civilian airports located in the greater Bay Area.
  • Distribute physical outreach materials to partners, including maps, posters, and brochures.
  • Ensure that partners digitally disseminate SPN materials, including an approach video, through e-newsletters and on airport/pilot club websites.
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of outreach materials and messages through offering expertise and by soliciting feedback from partners.
  • Attend targeted events (e.g., air shows, aviation conferences) to distribute products and speak with attendees, or, in lieu of attendance, contact event organizers to provide outreach information and materials.
  • Meeting with existing and new program partners in person, over video, and on the phone.
  • Meet regularly with SPN program staff.
  • Maintain a spreadsheet tracking partner contacts, product distribution and outreach events.
  • Analyze program data to determine the best places to focus outreach efforts.
  • Research and draft material to include in monthly pilot newsletters and social media posts.
  • Assist with or lead the development of an online training module for pilots.
  • Write situation reports (SIT reports) after outreach events.
  • Track disturbance incidents in the online portal.
  • Mail packets to pilots after seabird disturbances.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Experience with fixed-wing or helicopter aviation; position does not involve drone operations.

  • Knowledge of how flight regulations and procedures affect civilian aviation, especially with regard to airspace in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Experience in marketing, public outreach, and/or campaigning.
  • Experience in Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work at a computer for up to eight hours per day, with breaks.
  • Candidate must be based in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Pass a mandatory federal background check and defensive driving course.
  • Have a valid driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, a clean driving record, and access to reliable transportation to and from the office in the Presidio, San Francisco, as well as a personal vehicle for field outreach. Mileage will be reimbursed.
