Organization Background: Greater Farallones Association (GFA) is the nonprofit partner of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Greater Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. GFA conducts joint research, conservation, and education to support healthy ecosystems in the Sanctuaries, which comprise one of the most diverse and bountiful marine environments in the world, an area of 4,581 square miles off the northern and central California coast. With approximately 30 staff members, GFA is supported by a diverse mix of government grants, program service contracts, private philanthropy, and donated services. GFA has an annual operating budget of approximately $5 million and is co-located in the National Marine Sanctuary office in a historic building on Crissy Field in the Presidio, with an additional field office at Bodega Marine Lab.

Position Description: GFA is seeking a systems-oriented fundraiser to serve as the organization’s Development Manager, responsible for planning and executing the non-governmental fundraising and outreach efforts, including cultivating relationships with individuals, family foundations, and corporations. In further developing a strong base of support for GFA’s mission, the Development Manager will be responsible for growing revenue from existing supporters and building a long-term donor engagement and planned-giving program. The position will require a high level of collaboration, communication, and coordination with the GFA program and finance staff.

Job Duties

  • Coordinate all aspects of annual fundraising campaigns, including drafting appeal language, preparing segmented mailing lists, liaising with printers/mail houses, and tracking results.
  • Implement year-round stewardship for individual donors, including acknowledgment letters, thank-you notes, phone calls, and in-person meetings.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and personalized donor correspondence aligned with the organization’s voice and brand, and ensure all fundraising communications are tracked.
  • Support cultivation and stewardship activities for major donors and prospects in partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and program staff.
  • Plan and execute quarterly donor cultivation and stewardship events.
  • Further develop meaningful donor engagement, cultivation, and solicitation strategies that drive successful solicitations, renewals, and upgrades.
  • Utilize CRM (Salesforce) and online payment processing (Click & Pledge) systems to record and track development efforts.
  • Ensure data integrity, including deduplication, coding accuracy, and documentation of donor interactions. Contribute to the refinement of processes, systems, and workflows that strengthen donor engagement and revenue generation.
  • Track fundraising metrics and report them to the Executive Director and the Board.
  • Coordinate core communications functions, including our monthly e-newsletter, social media presence, and other public-facing messaging, to elevate GFA’s mission and impact.
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure alignment on messaging and communications related to engaging GFA’s supporter base.
  • Maintain the development calendar and track deadlines for campaigns, events, and reporting.
  • Support the Board Development Committee and its activities.
  • Maintain high performance standards and ensure timely completion of responsibilities.
  • Other related duties when assigned.

Qualifications

  • Over 3 years in a development role at a nonprofit organization, preferably in the environmental stewardship, marine science, or similar field.
  • Demonstrated success in raising funds for a nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing annual giving strategies.
  • Experience in the moves management approach to fundraising is preferred but not required.
  • General knowledge or willingness to learn about ocean conservation.
  • Skills in storytelling, digital engagement, and content development. Experience with marketing platforms, such as Mailchimp, is a plus.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit operations and key concepts, such as restricted vs. unrestricted funding
  • Ability to work as an effective team member and be a strong and proactive communicator with donors and colleagues alike.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including consensus building and intuitive listening.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Salesforce or another CRM for donor tracking.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and the ability to effectively utilize digital tools for communication, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn skills associated with fundraising events.
  • Proven organizational and project management expertise, with the ability to prioritize and oversee multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and autonomously without oversight.
  • Willingness to be receptive to constructive input and feedback, with an ability to incorporate insights to enhance performance and achieve continuous growth.
  • Ability to successfully pass a federal background check.
  • Hold a valid Driver’s License and good driving record, and have access to a vehicle for occasional travel to meetings in the Bay Area and Sonoma County (mileage is reimbursed).
  • Ability to reside within commutable distance from GFA’s San Francisco office.
  • Ability to work at a computer for up to eight hours per day (with breaks), lift up to 20 pounds, and walk up two flights of stairs.

Employee Status and Benefits

This hybrid remote/on-site position is 32-40 hours per week (with flexibility for the right candidate), with a minimum of 1 day per week onsite at GFA’s office on Crissy Field in San Francisco and occasional local travel for meetings and events. The starting FTE salary is $80,000-$90,000, depending on experience.
