Overview

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) addresses critical challenges facing our oceans, human health and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. By bringing world-class science and transformative workforce development to Gloucester’s historic waterfront, GMGI is catalyzing the regional economy. Founded in 2013, a strategy triad guides our work and includes: a state-of-the-art research institute where we conduct marine research powered by genomics; Gloucester Biotechnology Academy (Academy), which prepares young adults to become biotech lab technicians; and our science community, expanding the local economy as we build a vibrant science hub on Cape Ann.

The Academy offers innovative science education programs, which prepare high school graduates for careers as entry-level technicians in biotechnology and life science laboratories. The Academy also offers STEM enrichment courses to middle school and high school students that foster exploration, discovery, and problem-solving skills using cutting-edge molecular biology and cell culture. We strive to instill a sense of curiosity about the natural world and an understanding of the many career opportunities.

We seek two summer Teaching Assistants (TAs) for our STEM enrichment courses that will be rolled out through our partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. TAs will be part of the team delivering our laboratory-centered curriculum. Positions will be full-time (35 hours per week) for 9 weeks from June 24 – August 23. Both positions will include teaching and training students in modern laboratory skills and techniques. Successful candidates will have experience with molecular biology and biotechnology workflows and exemplify the professional demeanor required for success in a scientific laboratory.
