Position Summary:
The Assistant Manager of Educational Operations and Community is responsible for establishing and maintaining new outreach opportunities while ensuring the outreach program is implemented in a way that maximizes student experience within the local schools and community. The person in this role will work to cultivate the department’s outreach initiatives with partnerships through the local school districts and other non-profit organizations. This Assistant Manager directly interfaces with a variety of audiences on a daily basis including students (pre-k through college), teachers/administrators, parents, education team members, and other teams within Georgia Aquarium. This person will facilitate the organization of education events, camps, and community related educational event.
The Assistant Manager of Educational Operation and Community Programs is also responsible for overseeing the Operations Liaison in order to ensure the ongoing communication between the Education Team, Sales, and Guest Services as well as managing the use of volunteers and interns. The Assistant Manager will develop the staff schedule, maintain department supplies, and assess camp needs. This person is the first point of contact for all internal and external audiences who may have questions, concerns, or ideas on program enhancement by opportunities to collaborate with other Georgia Aquarium Departments. In addition, the Assistant Manager will participate in evening or weekend events including but not limited to Educator Open House, conferences, and professional development events.
Responsibilities:
- Aid the Manager and Assistant Manager of Curriculum, Instruction, and Programming with the development and implementation of learning experiences that are tailored to the needs of a variety of audiences, including but not limited to schools, campers, and special interest groups.
- Manage development and execution of outreach programs to engage local schools, community organizations, and key stakeholders, fostering partnerships that enhance educational opportunities and support the organization's mission.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the department that include maintaining department budget, evaluations, scheduling staff for outreach and other events, and processing payroll for direct reports.
- Collaborate with other departments to coordinate camp and on special interest projects as needed (i.e., presentations, exhibits, events, etc.).
- Organize the development and coordination of outreach programs and special programing including but not limited to Sponsored Education Admissions, homeschool programming, outreach, Camp H20, science nights, festivals, partnerships with schools, or other initiatives.
- Communicate with teachers, parents and administrators regarding program needs, funding and ticketing. Ensure that team members maintain proper communication with teachers, parents, and community members.
- Assist in the management of the education team as needed. Provide support with operations, scheduling staff, volunteers and interns for outreach programs, camps, and as needed any other programs.
- Foster and maintain positive working relationships with departments including but not limited to group sales, guest programs, guest services, zoological operations, security, environmental operations, graphics and exhibits department to create an exceptional guest experience.
- Monitor communication between Education Department, Sales, and Guest Services to ensure maximum production from education team.
- Required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Provide the highest standard of customer service to guests.
- Adhere to all GAI policies.
- Perform other duties as workload necessitates.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or education-related field required.
- At least 3 years’ experience teaching in formal or informal setting.
- Previous experience and a passion for working with children and animals is a plus.
- Preferred experience with handling animals.
- Experience leading others towards a common goal and a desire to cultivate an atmosphere of positivity, respect, and fun.
- Current knowledge of wildlife conservation, scientific research, education trends, and environmental issues is preferred.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to interface with internal and external audiences.
- A general posture of thinking outside the box, taking challenges head-on, and assuming the best in others.
- Ability to organize, manage time and set priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Willingness to be flexible and shift priorities to meet departmental and aquarium-wide objectives.
- Ability to stay calm under pressure.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills as well as presentation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
