GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations.

The Working Group DeepSea Monitoring in the Research Unit Marine Geosystems of the Research Division Marine Biogeochemistry offers a position starting as soon as possible as a

Technical/Engineering Scientist (m/f/d)

to advance Technologies and Management Practices for Munitions Clearance and Disposal at Sea

For our CAMMera project (Clearance Activities for Marine Munition through Efficient Remediation Approaches), we are looking for a dedicated person to support our efforts to further develop technologies and procedures to perform explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) at sea. In addition to advancing critical technologies, CAMMera aims at giving guidance for the final steps to clear and remediate marine munition dumpsites. The project builds on previous successful research projects (e.g., BASTA, ExPloTect, CONMAR and MMinE-SwEEPER) that identified environmental threats, developed chemical analytical devices, advanced smart mapping and object detection and came up with strategies for monitoring explosive chemical release. CAMMera focuses on the final disposal of marine munition from dumpsites with industrial-scale ambition. It is funded under the EU Pilot Project Funds by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). It includes industrial and scientific partners from Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and the EU.

The tasks and requirements are as follows:

Your tasks in the project:

  • You review and compare technologies for munitions clearance and disposal
  • You take ownership for the development of a Best Available Technologies (BAT) reference document on explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) with a focus on the clearance and disposal stage on an industrial scale
  • You support colleagues in the conceptualization of a permit process for a munition disposal plant at sea
  • You work independently but align your research and discuss your findings with international project partners

Our Requirements:

  • Completed master’s degree or diploma in engineering (in environmental engineering, maritime engineering, engineering management, or a related field)
    • Alternatively: academic degrees in related technical or natural science fields are viable if you have at least three years of proven professional experience relevant to the tasks above
  • Experience in the development of technical documents, standard operating procedures, or handbooks
  • Very good knowledge of English

Additional beneficial skills:

  • Knowledge in the field of explosive ordnance disposal, of relevant munition properties, and of technological options for their management
  • Experience in the preparation, execution, and evaluation of workshops and interviews
  • Professional experience (in a maritime scientific field)

At a workplace directly on the Kiel Fjord with many leisure and recreational opportunities, we offer you:

  • Good conditions for work-life balance: We offer, among other things, the possibility of mobile working and individual working time arrangements, vacation courses for the children of our employees, and good support in finding a place in a daycare center at the Kiel site
  • Support services for professional and personal life situations
  • An exciting work environment with the opportunity to provide important impetus for the development of sustainable solutions
  • Exciting topics in an international environment
  • Work in the field of marine and climate research, a forward-looking area with social significance
  • 30 vacation days + additional time off at Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
  • Company pension plan and capital-forming benefits

The position is available for a funding period until June 30, 2028. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E-13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position must be filled with at least 75% of a full-time position.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply. GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
