GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations.

The research unit Physical Oceanography of the research division 1: Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics is offering a position

Scientist (m/f/d)

starting as soon as possible.

We are looking for a physical oceanographer with a PhD and many years of experience in the field of observational oceanography and the related scientific analysis of regional and global oceanic data sets.

The position involves the investigation of key processes of large-scale circulation and the role of the ocean in climate processes based on the analysis of observational and modelling data. This includes methods for analysing different and in particular inhomogeneous data sets, also with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, as well as the support and further development of database systems. The position also includes participation in research trips, as well as planning and carrying out research trips. The supervision of student assistants, assistance with the supervision of Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D projects, as well as public lectures and contributions to knowledge transfer are desirable.

Interest in carrying out your own scientific projects and research cruises, also in co-operation with other working groups at GEOMAR and internationally, is required.

  • Independent preparation /follow-up of sub-projects for complex international sea-going expeditions
  • Applying for and independently carrying out scientific projects (incl. sea voyages) with national and European funding organisations (e.g. DFG, BMBF, EU)
  • Independent guidance of student assistants and supervision of qualification theses
  • Close cooperation with technical staff for the preparation and realisation of sea voyages
  • Support and further development of database systems
  • Research tasks in a measuring oceanographic working group for the investigation of key processes of the large-scale circulation of the Atlantic and other sea areas

Qualification

  • PhD in physical oceanography, general climate science, mathematics, physics or marine data science
  • Several years of experience in seagoing observational physical oceanography
  • Several years of experience in analysing observational data
  • First author publications in the fields of physical oceanography or climate science using data from seagoing experiments
  • Willingness and ability to participate in seagoing expeditions
  • good English language skills (written and spoken)

Desirable:

  • Experience in successfully applying for and carrying out research projects and research cruises
