GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations. The working group "Management Ecology of Marine Macrophytes" investigates the biodiversity of macroalgal habitats and their response to global change. Habitat expansions and the introduction of molecular genetic methods have led to extensive revisions of the species inventories of German coastal ecosystems in recent decades. These new findings have necessitated major adjustments to the identification literature for macroalgae, which was last fundamentally revised more than 30 years ago. A concept based on the use of digital possibilities - such as the Internet-based aspect of the "Seakey" identification key for brown seaweeds of the German North Sea (https://seaweeds.awi.de/) - can simultaneously facilitate the accessibility and adaptation of identification keys to future changes in the species inventory.

Our research group within the research unit "Experimental Ecology" and the research division "Marine Ecology" intends to create such a key for macroalgae of the German Baltic Sea and offers a position as a

Scientist (m/f/d) for
taxonomy of marine macroalgae

starting on October 1st 2024 or at the earliest possible date.

Job Description

Your tasks will be to

  • update the macroalgal species inventory of the German Baltic Sea
  • create species profiles for the existing species with documentation of characteristic features by producing suitable photos or drawings
  • create unique identification keys for these species, either by creating new keys or by converting existing correct keys into a modern and user-friendly form, similar to the matrix concept of the "Seakey" key
  • develop a printable form of the key and the species profiles, including the preparation for printing
  • organize and implement the digitalization of the identification keys

Qualification

Required qualifications are

  • a degree (MSc or higher) in biology or other life science orientated subjects
  • good species knowledge of marine macroalgae, especially of the European region, proven by corresponding publications or practical activities
  • experience with the documentation and visualisation of species characteristics, including micro and macro photography and/or biological drawing
  • experience with scientific practices (preparation of publications, scientific research, summarisation of scientific texts and lectures) and the recording of scientific content, so that new findings on algal taxonomy can also be incorporated into the development of the identification key
  • experience with photo editing tools, as well as design and layout for desktop/digital publishing.
  • good English skills, both spoken and written

Desirable qualifications are

  • good knowledge of the German language
  • experience with the creation of determination keys
  • experience with microscopy and the preparation of specimens such as tissue cross-sections
  • driving licence for car and willingness to travel along the German Baltic Sea coast and to collect field material
  • good teamwork skills and flexibility; in particular willingness to co-operate with our SeaKey project partners at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven
  • good knowledge of standard software programmes
  • experience with the creation and maintenance of websites

At a workplace, directly on the Kiel Fjord with many leisure and recreational opportunities, we offer you:

  • Good conditions for work-life balance: We offer, among other things, the possibility of mobile working and individual working time arrangements, vacation courses for the children of our employees, and good support in finding a place in a daycare center at the Kiel site
  • Support services for professional and personal life situations
  • An exciting work environment with the opportunity to provide important impetus for the development of sustainable solutions
  • Exciting topics in an international environment
  • Work in the field of marine and climate research, a forward-looking area with social significance
  • 30 vacation days + additional time off at Christmas and New Year's Eve
  • Company pension plan and capital-forming benefits

The position is to be filled for a fixed term of two years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position is divisible, flexible working time models are generally possible.
