Duties

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, MLI) and the University of Quebec at Rimouski (Institute des Sciences de la Mer, ISMER) are calling for applicants for two MSc candidates who will be funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (via the RAP) for a period of 2 years. The students must enroll at ISMER. The successful candidates will work in collaboration with the ecophysiology laboratory of Dr. David Deslauriers at ISMER and the benthic ecophysiology and biochemistry research group of Dr. Daniel Small at MLI.

One successful candidate will join a project entitled “Towards predicting the effect of multiple climate change drivers and extreme climatic events on the bioenergetic physiology of decapod crustaceans in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.,” focussing on the effects of warming, heat waves, and ocean acidification on juvenile stages of the American lobster Homarus americanus and the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio.

The second successful candidate will join a project entitled “How many is too many? Unravelling the role of density-dependent population cycles of redfish (Sebastes mentella and S. fasciatus) on their predator-prey interaction with northern shrimp under the context of climate change.,” focusing on the effect of acute temperature and oxygen changes on redfish feeding and metabolism, as the biomass of this species.

The main objectives of both positions will be to develop physiological performance curves on a range of key characteristics (e.g., feeding, metabolism, acid-base regulation, thermal tolerance) on the species of interest. The data produced will improve bioenergetic models for supporting fisheries and conservation management in the St. Lawrence Gulf and Estuary.
