The Arctic and Aquatic Research Division (AARD) of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is based at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Division provides information and advice to support the management of Arctic fisheries resources, their habitat and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and on the Yukon North Slope. Successful management and conservation of these resources depends on acquiring, interpreting and sharing biological information, the processes affecting them and the ecosystem of which they are part.
Challenges of the position:
• Investigation of characteristics of narwhal skin pattern that can be utilized for individual identification.
• Processing of aerial images from drone to identify narwhals and create a catalogue of individually identified individuals.
• Computing the body condition of narwhals from drone images.
• Statistical analyses to estimate the size of narwhal population based on the photo-identification catalogue. Statistical analysis of body condition measures to determine the variation among narwhal stocks.
• Defend research, internally in DFO and/or externally at meetings/conferences.
• Data analysis, interpretation, and publication in government reports and peer-reviewed journals.
Candidates of the program will work at Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Freshwater Institute, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Candidates will also interact with members of the Hunters and Trappers Organizations/Associations and non-governmental organizations in the development and implementation of research plans, and during the dissemination of research findings.
The intent is to staff a Master’s student position. A pool of candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions in the future.

Eligibility
You are eligible for this program if you meet these 3 requirements:
• You are a full-time student in a post-secondary institution
• You are enrolled in an academic program that requires research as part of your curriculum
• You meet the minimum age required in the province/territory of work

Currently enrolled or willing to enroll in an MSc program at the University of Manitoba in Biological Sciences.
Experience in marine mammal research methods.
Experience using photogrammetry in biology.
Experience in statistical analysis using R or equivalent software.
