Duties
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is the federal Department responsible for safeguarding and managing Canada's fisheries, oceans and freshwater resources. Under the supervision of the Division Manager, the Section Head is expected to lead program delivery, manage teams and financial resources, collaborate and present information to stakeholders, and manage programs to support DFO decisions. These programs can include scientific studies in areas such as monitoring surveys, stock assessments (including salmon), habitat assessments, marine conservation, genetics and genomics, aquaculture, impacts of anthropogenic stressors, among others.
Intent of the process
The intent of this process is to hire one or more positions within the Science Branch in the Pacific Region. A pool will be created in anticipation of future vacancies. The pool may be used to staff positions with similar qualifications within the department in various locations and/or tenures throughout the Pacific Region.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.
EXPERIENCE:
• Significant* experience assessing, synthesizing or analyzing science-based information from a variety of sources.
• Significant* experience in leading teams that can implement science projects or programs.
• Experience in managing financial and human resources.
• Experience in preparing briefing materials and carrying out briefings for senior management at the Executive level on program implementation and issue management.
• Experience developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with various groups such as Indigenous communities, other levels of government, scientific or technical experts, industry representatives, ENGOs, or other stakeholders.
• Experience in preparing technical reports, presentations, or other similar documents or publications.
• Experience in presenting science information and advice to a wide range of audiences including Indigenous communities, Industry representatives, clients, or the public.
*Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex related activities for a period of approximately two (2) years.

ASSET EDUCATION:
• Graduation with a Masters level degree or higher from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with a specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in managing fisheries stock assessment or monitoring programs.
• Experience in the application of stock assessment theories or concepts relevant to DFO’s sustainable fisheries framework and the precautionary approach.
• Experience in the application of scientific theories or concepts to address issues related to the conservation of fish or fish habitat in marine or freshwater systems.
• Experience in developing innovative solutions relevant to complex scientific problems.
• Experience in developing and implementing programs or project management frameworks or processes in order to deliver required outputs such as strategic advice for decision makers.
• Experience in managing large and diverse teams.
• Experience in the application or implementation of policies or guidelines relating to occupational safety and health in the workplace.
• Experience with policies and guidelines related to animal care in a research setting, and their application to fish or invertebrate research and husbandry.
• Experience in conducting or managing consultation or engagement activities with Indigenous groups.
• Experience coordinating activities related to advancing scientific understanding of natural resources with multiple partners and stakeholders, such as Indigenous communities, government agencies, academia, industry groups, or environmental organizations.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Mobility associated with possession of a valid Driver’s licence
• Willingness and ability to travel within Canada as well as internationally
• Flexibility in hours of work
• Willingness and ability to undertake occasional weekend and overtime work as required
• Willingness and ability to carry out field work in small boats and larger research vessels
