Marine Ventures International (MVI) has an exciting opportunity for a Second Mate to support the M/V Independence in Port Hueneme, CA.

The Second Mate works as an integral part of the Officer team to ensure the vessel is crewed and maintained in a seaworthy, clean and safe manner. The Second Mate, in conjunction with the other vessel officers, maintains all navigation gear, charts and publications, safety equipment, and medical supplies. The Second Mate is the officer in charge of a navigational watch and assists in the supervision of the deck team. This position is a full time even rotation requiring 12 hours of work each day during respective rotation. MVI will pay travel expenses for crew rotations.

LOCATION: Port Hueneme, CA

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:

Valid USCG (United States Coast Guard) License as Third Mate Oceans Unlimited or Mate of vessel 1600t or greater, STCW-95 (Standard of Training & Certification of Watch Standards) Certificate, Lifeboatman’s Endorsement, Valid MMD (Merchant Mariners Document), and Valid Radar Endorsement with ARPA qualification.

1600 Ton Master’s License, Oceans is a plus
Dynamic position experience is a plus
Must be intimately familiar with both the international and U.S. inland rules of the road.
License must have GMDSS
Must have experience with deck cargo load-out and securing procedures.
Must be able to work safely on deck, such as tying up vessel, working deck machinery (a-frames, cranes, winches).
Must have proven ability to interact with scientific and other technical personnel who may not be conversant with daily shipboard operations and limitations.
Rigging experience.
Ability to operate and familiarity with standard bridge equipment.
Familiar with MS office.
Familiar with NS Enterprise is a plus.
Familiar with Subsea mapping programs is a plus.
Familiar with hydro acoustics is a plus.
Ability to work with other crewmembers, scientists, project and technical personnel.
