The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide. Established in 1971, it has nearly 90% of UN member states as Contracting Parties, emphasizing the importance of wetlands for biodiversity and human survival. The Convention facilitates international cooperation, resource mobilization, and capacity building, while promoting the designation and management of Wetlands of International Importance. With over 2,500 designated wetlands covering more than 257 million hectares, the Convention plays a crucial role in global environmental governance and wetland conservation efforts.
