DIRECTOR OF IMPACT POSITION DESCRIPTION

Conservation X Labs seeks a passionate and skilled impact professional to serve as our Director of Impact to help us meet our mission of ending the Sixth Mass Extinction. This position will be responsible for supporting a distinct and effective effort to capture and measure CXL’s impact globally at the organizational level, program level, and through individual initiatives, across multiple fields, and through multiple mechanisms, from building and deploying new technologies to innovations programs that are seeking to build the future of conservation and bring in new solvers, new solutions, and new disciplines and approaches. WHO WE ARE Conservation X Labs (CXL) is a technology and innovation company that creates and incentivizes innovative solutions to prevent the Sixth Mass Extinction. We create new products in our labs, lead open innovation competitions to harness planetary genius, and empower talented innovators across disciplines to collaborate and revolutionize the future of conservation. Our programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Amazon X Labs – A multi-country initiative intended to move the Amazon away from economies of the past based on extraction to economies of the future based on regeneration, that harness innovation and frontier technology + indigenous knowledge to create new sustainable products.
  • Forgotten Parks and The Sentinel – Harnessing and democratizing computer vision and machine learning through both hardware and software to provide exponential leverage to conservationists onthe ground to manage more wildlife and wildlands.
  • Democratizing Diagnostics for Pandemic Prevention and Sustainability – Putting advanced genetic diagnostics into the hands of those at the front lines of preventing emerging diseases, invasive pests, and agricultural health through field-based hardware and democratizing the development of new diagnostic tests with partners in government, universities, and the private sector.
  • The Extinction Solutions Index – Creating a “drawdown for extinction” to identify the most important solutions for conservation to bring to scale.
  • The Textile Circularity Challenge – Creating future circular industries for harnessing vintage fiber and ending textile waste.
  • The Fire Grand Challenge – The Fire Grand Challenge seeks to fundamentally change how we live withfire. We are seeking solutions that can transform local and systemic fire stewardship by braidingtogether place-based engagement and knowledge with cutting-edge innovation and technology.

The Director of Impact is a vital role at a crucial time in the history of Conservation X Labs (CXL) and for the field of biodiversity conservation itself. We have ambitious goals, which include building a 100- million-dollar organization in ten years (10X our size) that has global impact, so we need someone with the skill set not only for today, but to create the foundation for the organization that we hope to become. Unlike many conservation organizations, CXL has a strong belief in the power of markets to scale impactful solutions, while also reducing our dependency on philanthropy.

THE POSITION Conservation X Labs seeks a team player with a passion for conservation, technology, and connecting impact to a mission. This position will work with the CEO, President, COO, and Head of Advancement to ideate, develop, and implement the Conservation X Labs impact strategy and research. This will include activities related to market research, management of team, log frames and impact collection, collating results from M&E, supporting the development of an impact capture structure, conducting surveys to existing networks and identifying information to highlight in communications efforts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CXL-Wide Impact Strategy ● Develop and facilitate a cohesive process to develop an organization-wide monitoring and evaluation (M&E) approach, framework, and standards to tracking the innovations, teams, individuals, companies, and partners that are supported or otherwise driven by CXL ● Research and organize the results of CXL’s programs to date, and assess their impact, and how it influences our future investments ● Develop indicators and an M&E approach for each project, including harnessing experimental design, statistics, and randomized controlled trials where appropriate to evaluate impact ● Provide feedback on project strategies and activities to better engage our communities, improve the number and quality of ideas and our solvers ● Help develop and implement periodic reviews and learning processes, tracking and communicating actionable learnings ● Provide support in preparing for meetings with top executives and business units ● Work with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications and the Head of Advancement to create compelling narratives that capture CXL’s impact Impact Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation ● Provide M&E analysis to maximize project impacts for existing and proposed CXL projects ● Support monitoring efforts and rigorously evaluate team’s activities and theories of change in relation to the mission ● Develop standard M&E tools and templates; train CXL teams on the applicability of these tools and templates ● Conduct longitudinal studies on companies coming out of CXL programs and initiatives ● Report quarterly, half-yearly, and annual progress to CXL leadership and program teams, as well as donors ● Work with the Head of Advancement to develop an Annual Impact Report

Minimum Qualifications ● Master’s degree or higher in conservation sciences, environmental sciences, economics, international development, global health, science education, or related field and work of at least at least 8 years related experience, or equivalent combination. ● Demonstrated experience developing and/or implementing M&E plans or activities related to conservation, development, or a related field ● Experience researching, critically analyzing, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action ● Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically ● An understanding or interest in inspiring innovation to solve conservation problems ● Experience working with a diverse, multicultural set of stakeholders ● Research experience in compiling information and presenting it in an impactful way ● Self-starter capable of proactively delivering on requirements ● Ability to work both independently and in a team-setting ● Well-organized and detail-oriented

Desired Qualifications ● Master’s degree or Ph.D in in conservation sciences, environmental sciences, economics, international development, global health, science education, or related field and work combined of at least 10-12 years related experience or equivalent combination ● An understanding or interest in inspiring innovation to solve conservation problems ● Strong statistical and analytical background ● Experience with experimental design and hypothesis-driven impact evaluation ● Experience with producing impact reports or similar ● Demonstrated ability to manage a program and complex projects with interdependencies ● Some understanding of the conservation space and key players ● Startup, tech, and innovation company experience preferred

SALARY: 115-132K with possibility of bonus, benefits including retirement, health, dental, and vision, liberal leave and telework. LOCATION: Preference for DC area candidates, but willing to consider exceptional candidates located elsewhere.
