About the Position
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is seeking a highly organised and detail-oriented individual to join our Fisheries Monitoring and Compliance (FMC) team as a Data Assistant. This role is essential for the administration of fishery monitoring data, ensuring the accurate processing, validation, and timely submission of fishery data into CCAMLR’s data systems.

The Data Assistant will work under the general direction of the Fisheries Monitoring and Compliance Manager and will play a key role in supporting the ongoing work of the Secretariat. This role is fixed-term, for a period of 12 months.

You will be responsible for the receipt, processing, validation and quality assurance of fishery monitoring data—including catch and effort reports—submitted by data providers, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established procedures at every step.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the in-season monitoring of CCAMLR fisheries, including annual updates to the fishery monitoring system, routine processing of catch and effort reports, preparation of fishery updates, and monitoring of vessel entries and exits within management areas
  • Generating draft Fishery Monitoring Catch Reports for review, approval and distribution
  • Supporting fishery monitoring and closure processes in line with CCAMLR's Conservation Measures
  • Managing the upload and quality assurance of compliance-related data submissions, including transhipment and vessel movement notifications
  • Assisting with broader Fisheries Monitoring and Compliance (FMC) data submissions as required, working collaboratively with the FMC team—particularly during peak fishing season

This role suits someone with strong attention to detail, sound data-management skills, and the ability to work accurately under time pressure in a dynamic, internationally significant environment.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Data entry and processing experience using various software systems
  • High level computer literacy
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills, particularly MS Access and Excel for the data entry, processing, quality, validation extraction and presentation.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL to work on routine database queries
  • Knowledge of R coding language (desirable) and technical competence to embrace new software and new systems
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Relevant tertiary or vocational (Certificate/Diploma) qualification, or related work experience in a similar role.

Why Choose CCAMLR?

  • Meaningful work: Make a real difference by contributing to the conservation of Antarctic marine life
  • Generous leave: 6 weeks of annual leave
  • Supportive environment: Be part of a dedicated and passionate team
  • Annual salary starting at $70,372+ super and benefits
