The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary (CHNMS) is a grassroots initiative led by the Northern Chumash Tribal Council aimed at designating a national marine sanctuary along California's Central Coast. This sanctuary is significant as it represents the first Tribal-nominated national marine sanctuary in the U.S., promoting Indigenous perspectives in ocean conservation. The sanctuary is expected to generate approximately $23 million in economic activity and create 600 new jobs while preserving unique coastal ecosystems and Chumash cultural heritage. It aims to protect the area from offshore oil expansion and other environmental threats, fostering collaboration among various stakeholders including federal, state, and local governments, as well as California Native American Tribes.
