POSITION: Policy Intern

OFFICE LOCATION: Sacramento, CA

FUNCTIONAL AREA: Legal & Policy

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Hourly, Non-Exempt

COMPENSATION: $16.70 / hourly

Position Summary: The Policy Intern (intern) will work closely with the Policy team, regional directors and regional staff to provide internal policy support to CalTrout staff and assist in state-level
political engagement. The intern will be expected to engage with the appropriate internal staff and partners to complete their projects, and will also be expected to present their work to CalTrout staff at the conclusion of their internship. The intern will be required to work in person from our office or the state legislature 2 days per week, and undergrad, recently graduated and graduate students from a variety of academic backgrounds are welcome to apply. The intern will begin working on Feb 3, 2025 and conclude the internship on May 15, 2025.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The intern will learn the basic skills of state lobbying, non-profit advocacy and will

develop their communicative and strategic abilities by shadowing the Policy Associate and

other members and partners of the Policy Team. The intern will also witness firsthand how a bill is moved through the state legislature and will witness the formation of the state budget as they engage with the Policy Team on these items. The intern will practice these skills when engaging with the legislature and agency staff by attending scheduled meetings, attending drop-in visits, and registering brief support or opposition in legislative committee hearings. They will also connect with CalTrout partners and outside organizations as they learn to engage on policy issues.

Requirements & Qualifications:

The following are requirements of the internship position:

  • Must be enrolled in studies to complete a 2 or 4 year undergraduate or graduate degree OR has recently earned a graduate or undergraduate degree.
  • Must be able to work 2 days in-person per week.
  • Must demonstrate a strong interest in environmental policy in the application process.
