Job Description and Duties

The California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is hiring two limited term Environmental Scientists (30x30 Staff Scientist) to help advance California’s goal to conserve 30% coastal waters by 2030 (the “30x30” initiative) and broader strategic priorities related to enhancing coastal and marine biodiversity. The Environmental Scientists will be responsible for supporting tribal consultations and stakeholder convenings; identifying science-based strategies to strengthen biodiversity conservation in California’s coastal waters (including research gaps that warrant near-term investment); and coordinating with state and federal partner agencies. The Environmental Scientists will also be responsible for grant and contract management, including developing scopes of work and budgets, tracking deliverables, and coordinating with grantees. The Environmental Scientists will provide additional support and capacity for implementation of broader OPC and California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) priorities related to biodiversity conservation, such as habitat protection and restoration.

Applicants should have a strong scientific and policy background, working knowledge of coastal and ocean issues and stakeholders in California, experience working on projects or research related to conserving ocean and coastal biodiversity (including spatial management in California or elsewhere), and excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks is a must. Proficiency reading and speaking Spanish is desired.

This is a 12-month limited term position that may be extended to 24 months with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Completion of the Environmental Scientist State Civil Service Examination is required, and exam scores must rank in the top three tiers within the applicant pool to be further considered in the application process; information on the examination can be found here.

Flexible Work Schedule: This position is considered Remote-Centered, which means incumbent would telework 50% or more of the time within a work month from an alternate work location. The position incumbent can telework with a management approved telework agreement and schedule.

OPC staff are required to work from the office in Sacramento a minimum of two days a month.

OPC is a Cabinet-level state policy body that works to ensure healthy coastal and ocean ecosystems by advancing innovative, science-based policy and management, making strategic investments, and catalyzing action through partnerships and collaboration.
