Job Description and Duties

Seeking applications from highly motivated individuals with a marine science background who are interested in management of California's globally recognized network of marine protected areas (MPAs) and management program. The network is composed of 124 ecologically connected MPAs and 14 special closures. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the MPA Network through a novel partnership-based approach to ensures the network is adaptively managed and informed by engaged partnerships. The management program is supported by four pillars: monitoring and research, enforcement and compliance, outreach and education, and policy and permitting.

Duties for this position include analyzing and evaluating complex environmental and socioeconomic data to identify key management issues, draw conclusions, and to make recommendations for adaptive management. Good written and verbal communication skills are necessary to effectively coordinate with our diverse partners including state and federal agencies, tribes, academia, and non-government organizations. Knowledge of the Administrative Procedures Act is important as adaptive management actions may result in amendments to MPA regulations.

Staff routinely make presentations to decision makers, at symposiums, and public venues to share information about the management program. Preparation of scientific documents such as management plans, peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and popular articles are also required. Other duties include but are not limited to overnight travel to meetings, participation in field investigations on boats at sea and shore based. Working Conditions

About 70% of your time will be indoors, so you must be able to perform computer related activities for prolonged periods. This position also requires occasional field work aboard research vessels and from shore deploying and retrieving equipment and handling live and dead organisms.

This position is being advertised in Humboldt, San Mateo, Monterey, and Orange counties; you need only apply for one county to be considered for all the office locations offered for this position.

    3. Describe your training and experience with conducting a scientific research project or study that you lead or were involved in. The description should include the study question, methods used, results and conclusions.
