Job Description and Duties

This position is limited term 12 months, may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

The California Coastal Commission’s Legal Division is seeking a Senior Legal Analyst to provide legal support to Attorneys, Coastal Program Analysts and Senior Management primarily to assist them in responding to Public Records Act requests. The Senior Legal Analyst may also draft and review legal documents to be recorded with County Recorders’ offices and provide guidance and assistance to enforcement staff statewide. This work takes the form of the most responsible, varied and complex paralegal duties.

The position will be filled in San Francisco. There may be occasional travel to other parts of the State.

The Senior Legal Analyst’s work involves:

  • reviewing requests for documents submitted under the Public Records Act or through subpoenas;
  • working with staff to gather documents responsive to such requests;
  • reviewing such documents for responsiveness and work with attorneys to identify relevant privileges and exemptions;
  • performing legal research and gathering factual information;
  • reviewing and analyzing title company reports and title exception documents;
  • reviewing and analyzing legal descriptions of real property, including surveyor-prepared land maps;
  • communicating, in writing and by telephone, with permit applicants, agents and attorneys to assist them with permit compliance;
  • maintaining logs and databases; and
  • assisting the Coastal Commission’s public access unit and the enforcement unit.
