Overview
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences invites applications for a full-time Assistant Director to the Tandy Center for Ocean Forecasting. This position will play a key role in a new data-modeling collaborative with the Maine Department of Marine Resources. This new collaborative emerged from the increasingly intersecting management issues in the Gulf of Maine, such as marine mammal management, fisheries, offshore wind, and a rapidly changing environment, along with the increasing availability of large datasets and data streams. The Assistant Director will help grow the science program within this data-modeling collaborative, with an initial emphasis on measurement and modeling of zooplankton as well as modeling questions related to North Atlantic right whales. The Assistant Director will also help with the day-to-day management and long-term strategy of the Center.
Requirements
Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field; postdoc experience preferred. Key areas of expertise include measurement and modeling of zooplankton (e.g. acoustic and optical quantification of zooplankton) and modeling questions related to marine mammals and their prey (e.g. species distribution modeling and forecasting). Other qualifications include:
  • Experience coding and modeling (R, Python, Matlab, or similar)
  • Track record demonstrating a commitment to publishing research findings
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required
  • Experience managing budgets and grant reporting
  • Understanding of management issues in the marine environment
We welcome applications from candidates who will bring to their research the perspective that comes from a nontraditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of those underrepresented in research and academia.

The salary range for this position is $67,800 - $99,000, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.
