Reports to: Education Manager

Salary Range: $51,000 – $62,000 annually (commensurate with experience) + benefits

Position Overview

For over 50 years, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) has supported world-class education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Through immersive, hands-on learning experiences grounded in rich coastal ecosystems and strengthened by partnerships with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, BMSC’s mission is to inspire transformational relationships with the ocean through science.

The Field Trip Program Coordinator (FTPC) plays a key role in delivering BMSC’s award-winning Field Trip Program, which provides multi-day educational experiences for students of all ages. The FTPC oversees group bookings, develops itineraries, and serves as the primary liaison between visiting groups and BMSC operations. Reporting to the Education Manager, the FTPC works collaboratively with other BMSC coordinators and supervises a team of Marine Science Educators to ensure the seamless delivery of exceptional field-based programming.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Field Trip Program Administration

  • Coordinate delivery of exceptional field trips for visiting groups including promotions, booking, staff and resources scheduling,
  • Deliver engaging, hands-on education and training in both classroom and outdoor settings, while ensuring participant safety
  • Liaise with K-12 and post-secondary educators/group leaders throughout the booking process and assemble programs to meet their needs.

Marine Science Educator Supervision

  • Support recruitment and retention of Marine Science Educators.
  • Set work schedules in alignment with program needs and efficient use of staff time
  • Oversee professional development of Field Trip Program staff, including early-season training and ongoing mentorship, and coordination of required certification where required.
  • Contribute to building a meaningful and rewarding work environment for Marine Science Educators and work to advance the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion in relation to staffing and program delivery.

Professional Development Programming

  • Support other coordinators with workshops and training opportunities (e.g., science communication, research skills, educator development) for students, researchers, and educators.
  • Collaborate with partners to design programs that strengthen participant skills while deepening engagement with BMSC’s research and facilities.

PromoScience Vision Execution

  • Support the design and implementation of programming and initiatives aligned with BMSC’s NSERC PromoScience objectives, focusing on hands-on marine science education that integrates the real-world research taking place at BMSC.
  • Support efforts to pilot, evaluate, and refine educational offerings and support their implementation into the Field Trip Program.
  • Assist with the preparation of future PromoScience submissions and other funding applications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Science or related discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Education) – consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise, train, and coordinate staff
  • Experience in coordinating lab and field-based programs for diverse age groups.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with students, school staff, Marine Science Educators and collaborators.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
