Salary: $65,000-75,000 per annum

Located on the stunning west coast of Vancouver Island, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) is a marine station that supports ocean access and is vibrant hub for coastal research, education, and community engagement. Position Overview

BMSC is seeking a Communications and Social Media Coordinator to lead the development and execution of our internal and external communication strategies and social media presence. Reporting to the Executive Director this role is instrumental in shaping BMSC’s public (including social media) presence, engaging stakeholders, and ensuring consistent messaging across departments.

This position is ideal for a strategic communicator with a creative mindset and a passion for storytelling. The successful candidate will collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders to highlight the impact of BMSC’s education, research, and community initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Communications & Social Media Strategy

• Develop and implement communication and social media strategies aligned with organizational goals and brand identity.

• Support the creation and implementation of integrated communication initiatives across internal teams, including Guest Services, Programs, and Research.

Internal Communications

• Manage and update the staff intranet, internal calendar of events, and other platforms to keep employees informed and engaged.

• Work with the Executive Director, to ensure the timely delivery of internal staff updates, all staff meetings, socials and other inclusive initiatives.

Stakeholder Communications

• Ensure consistent outreach to member universities, researchers, alumni, and community collaborators.

• Promote events, updates, and news across various stakeholder groups.

Content Creation & Social Media Management

• Develop engaging content (written, visual, and video) to promote BMSC’s work and impact.

• Manage social media platforms, create and schedule posts, and actively monitor engagement.

• Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) and adjust strategy based on data insights.

Community Relations & Media

• Build and maintain positive relationships with Huu-ay-aht First Nations, media outlets, influencers, and other partners.

Crisis Communications

• Develop and implement communication protocols for managing potential reputational risks or crises.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.

Skills & Experience

• 2-4 years of experience in a communications, social media, or public engagement role.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Proven experience managing social media platforms and creating original content.

• Strong understanding of analytics and ability to interpret and report on engagement metrics.

• Proficiency in Office 365 and digital media tools (e.g., Canva, Hootsuite, video editing software).

• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

• Experience working in a science, education, nonprofit, or semi-remote coastal/marine setting is an asset.

Other Requirements

• Valid driver’s license.

• Satisfactory Criminal Records Check.

• Ability to move around campus on uneven surfaces.

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as operational needs dictate.

Work Location: The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) is situated in Bamfield, British Columbia, nestled in a semi-remote area along the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island. This role includes the flexibility to work in a hybrid work environment.

Accommodation: Subsidized accommodation (bedroom, utilities, fully equipped – shared kitchen, internet, phone line) may be provided on BMSC property depending on availability and candidate preference.

Meals: Meals and snacks are provided during work hours for a subsidized rate.
