- Wage: $18.00 per hour

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) supports research and educational activities with a vision of enabling life-changing exploration and discovery and a mission of building research capacity for students and researchers. The Marine Science Assistant (MSA) will help support the research and education programs. This position includes a diverse range of duties including but not limited to: preparing and maintaining lab space and equipment for researchers and students, providing support for coastal field work, collecting and caring for research animals, and aiding with the administrative duties associated with BMSC’s programs. The MSA will be exposed to a broad network of researchers studying marine science, and will receive training in WHIMIS, Basic Marine First Aid, and the operation of small boats.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree in biological sciences, oceanography, or a related field
- Ability to interact in a friendly and professional manner with a range of clients; including meticulous and careful handling of administrative tasks
- Ability to work as part of a team or independently, as required
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Interest in marine biological education and research
Duties
- Assist BMSC in supporting its programs, clients, students, and researchers
- Assist with administrative tasks and the promotion/delivery of programs
- Assist the organization of research equipment, spaces, and inventory
- Provide support for researchers and students doing lab and field work
- Assist in the collection of animals and data for BMSC clients
- Assist with the general husbandry of aquatic organisms
- Work cooperatively with internal clients/departments
- Assist with other duties as required
Other skills and knowledge
- Proficiency in standard computer software and file management systems including MS Word and MS Excel
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some early morning, evenings, and weekends
