For 50 years, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) has supported year-round education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. BMSC is owned and managed by a not-for-profit organization, the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society, whose members are University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria. Our mission is to enable life-changing exploration and discovery in marine and coastal environments. Our programs support experiential learning and national/international research programs on climate challenges and solutions in coastal environments. Access to pristine coastal environments is a hallmark of BMSC research, and the BMSC maintains a fleet of boats and that support ocean access while an amazing seawater delivery system supports the husbandry of animals on the campus. BMSC is an important member of the local community and partnered with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations on several research, education and community initiatives.

The Position

Responsible for support and continued development of the WCUMSS Scientific Diving Program and ensures all diving activities conducted under WCUMSS are in compliance with the WCUMSS Diving Policy, the governing regulations of the Canadian Association for Underwater Sciences (CAUS), the Worker Compensation Board of British Columbia (WCB), Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

This is a full time position for 37.5 hours per week. The funding for this position is provided from Departments of Fisheries and Oceans, Aquatic Ecosystem and Restoration Fund in conjunction with the Kelp Rescue Initiative (KRI), a WCUMSS research program. The Assistant DSO will work closely with the BMSC DSO. Travel to other field sites and working some weekends will be required.

Primary duties and responsibilities

The BMSC ADSO is accountable to ensure the BMSC Scientific Diving Program, its training and certification of all scientific divers and dive tenders, are accomplished in accordance with the CAUS, “Standard of Practice for Scientific Diving.” This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Supervise diving activities for the KRI and other WCUMSS affiliated research and education activities
  • Assist in dive training and skill checkouts for KRI and the BMSC;
  • Assist in rescue training and practical rescue management;
  • Assist in the issuance of dive theory examinations;
  • Assist in the administration of all associated paperwork and record keeping; and
  • Assist in the provision of first aid and emergency oxygen training.
  • Assist in the training and assignment of surface safety attendants for all research dives.
  • Assist in the ongoing development of KRI dive programs in Western Canada
  • Assist WCUMSS partners in the development of CAUS programs
  • Assist in the establishment of reciprocal protocols with researchers/scientific divers from institutions with a scientific diving program and/or divers that hold the necessary certifications from institutions that do not have a scientific diving program
  • Provide dive support to the KRI, BMSC researchers and assist researcher(s) with project design
  • Collect data for KRI and the BMSC
  • Provide breathing air quality samples for testing annually, or as required by CAUS, WCB, OH&S and/or CSA
  • Liaise with CAUS, WCB, OH&S and CSA annually on safe diving practices and standards.
  • Organize/provide first aid, oxygen training for KRI, BMSC divers and dive tenders.
  • Safely maintain all diving equipment, such as but not limited to: breathing air compressor(s); scuba cylinders; and regulators.
  • Maintain positive security of all the BMSC dive records including, but not limited to: diver files; dive logs; annual statistics; and periodically audit the BMSC dive program records

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum BSc in marine sciences or related field.
  • Certified Scuba Instructor, from an accredited Scuba agency.
  • Experienced cold water diver.
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification.
  • Extensive experience working from small boats in remote coastal waters.
  • Knowledge of temperate coastal marine organisms.
  • Working knowledge of air fill stations, breathing air compressor operation and maintenance.
  • Hold a valid OFA Level 2 First aid qualification as a minimum.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate with BMSC staff members and its clientele.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, ability to interact in a friendly and professional manner with a range of clients and staff.
  • Effective computer proficiency with such programs as MS Office/Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be able to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and accepted standard practices.

Desirable

  • MSc in marine sciences or related field.
  • First aid and emergency oxygen provider instructor.
  • CAUS Scientific Diver trained.
  • Nitrox/Enriched Air blender and Instructor certified.
  • Scuba equipment service technician.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CAUS and WCB safety diving regulations.
  • Knowledge of WCB occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Experience in managing research diving activities.

Competencies

A strong Service Orientation, preferably with experience working at a university or similar institution. This means focusing one’s efforts on discovering and meeting the needs of students, instructors, and fellow staff members.

Strong Planning, Organizing and Coordinating skills. These involve thinking ahead, establishing priorities and allocating resources. Strong attention to detail is a must. They also involve monitoring and adjusting work to accomplish the goals of the Kelp Rescue Initiative and the BMSC.

Teamwork and Cooperation. This involves the ability to work co-operatively with all staff and departments at the Kelp Rescue Initiative and BMSC and with staff at member universities. It requires the desire and ability to understand and respond effectively to other people from diverse backgrounds with diverse views.

Flexibility, and willingness to adapt to and work effectively in diverse situations, and with diverse individuals or groups. Flexibility entails understanding and appreciating different and opposing perspectives on an issue, adapting one’s approach as situations change and accepting changes within one’s own job or organization.
