About this exciting opportunity

The ReefScan System Developer plays a key role in advancing marine survey technology by developing and supporting software for the ReefScan product ecosystem at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). Working in partnership with the Reef Joint Field Management Program (RJFMP), this role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining software that enables ReefScan devices to operate reliably in remote and low-connectivity marine environments. This includes delivering software for the ReefScan Field Console, developing browser-based interfaces, supporting communication between edge devices and backend services, and ensuring seamless integration with the Digital Oceans framework to enhance reef survey operations and data analytics.

The position requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to translate operational needs into practical software solutions while contributing to system design, prototyping, testing, validation, and ongoing support. The ReefScan System Developer also provides technical guidance, documents software components to promote maintainability, and supports troubleshooting and continuous improvement of the ReefScan platform. By identifying and resolving technical issues, adhering to established software architecture and standards, and upholding AIMS' Code of Conduct, Strategy 2040, and organisational values, the role contributes to the delivery of innovative, reliable technologies that strengthen reef monitoring and conservation efforts.

About you

You will hold a postgraduate qualification in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a related discipline, or possesses equivalent industry experience demonstrating advanced technical capability. You will bring considerable experience developing modern web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript and contemporary front-end frameworks, along with strong practical knowledge of APIs, client–server communication, distributed systems, and networked device interfaces.

Your technical expertise will extend to Progressive Web Applications (PWAs), offline-first design, browser-based storage, service workers, and software solutions designed for low-connectivity environments. Experience with edge computing, IoT, device-integrated software, local networking, and cloud-connected platforms enables them to develop robust, scalable applications for remote field operations. They also understand code automation tools, modern software design paradigms, and rapid prototyping techniques that support efficient development and transition into production.

  • AIMS AOF Level 5 salary ($126,440 to $138,614 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation
