About this exciting opportunity

In this role you will impact the delivery of our AIMS Strategy 2030 by assisting scientific staff in the pursuit of research goals and objectives in both laboratory and field environments through active participation in development, deployment and maintenance of AIMS scientific equipment. Working within the AIMS mechanical workshops offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about manufacturing bespoke equipment for the marine science environment.

The machine workshops predominantly comprise of 2 multi axis Mazak CNC machine centres that are the mainstay of producing components for projects. There is an array of 3D additive manufacturing printers within the workshop that aid in the prototyping and production of end use components. Other areas and techniques for producing equipment is that of plastic forming/ fabrication and polyurethane moulding. Current versions of various CAD/CAM software and auxiliary devices are utilised by staff members to assist with design and production of components for projects. Alongside the machine workshop is the fabrication workshop well equipped with a wide variety of welding and processing equipment.

About you

Your well-developed interpersonal skills and technical knowledge will enable you to effectively communicate with scientific staff to gain an understanding of their needs and develop innovative solutions. You will hold a trade qualification as a Fitter/Machinist or equivalent and have demonstrated experience with CNC machine programming, setting and operation.

Experience in R and D environment, 3D modelling software, CAM software and the use of additive manufacturing equipment would be highly advantageous to your success in this role.
