Co-op Term Position (4 months starting in May 2025)
Victoria, BC

WHAT ARE WE ALL ABOUT?

Archipelago has been around for over 40 years and is at the forefront of monitoring solutions for fisheries around the world. We create and deploy technology for electronic monitoring of commercial fishing vessels, employ dockside monitors to collect data, and report back to our clients using these tools. This data helps manage global fisheries and ensure sustainability for generations to come. We also perform a variety of marine environmental services to help protect habitats, support eco-friendly planning and safeguard sustainable development. Our head office sits right on the water in greater Victoria (Esquimalt), British Columbia and we have offices in port cities up and down the British Columbia coast as well as Alaska, Oregon and Australia.

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A DATA TECHNICIAN?
  • Verification of incoming data generated by field staff working in fishery monitoring projects
  • Data entry of information generated within the fishery monitoring projects
  • Maintenance of data storage and filing systems
  • Routine and ad hoc data reporting including electronic uploading of data
  • Liaise with field staff and clients regarding data quality and other data issues
  • Provide customer service to commercial fishing clients
  • Handle, process and catalogue biological samples
  • Field work as an at sea observer and/or a dockside monitor in remote locations may be required to support program needs
  • Review of electronic monitoring imagery and sensor data
  • Become knowledgeable about monitoring and management of various commercial fisheries in BC

WHAT DO YOU OFFER?
  • Attention to detail and problem solving
  • Experience with data entry, manipulation and analysis
  • Highly self-motivated with learning mindset and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral in person and on the phone, and written)
  • Adaptable personality and strong diplomacy skills
  • Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and meet strict timelines
  • Must be proficient with computers and be comfortable navigating through various applications simultaneously
  • Able to obtain Fisheries Observer Certification through Fisheries and Oceans Canada. A criminal records check will be required to perform validations and enter data.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including irregular hours including some weekends, evenings, and occasional travel
  • Ability to travel within Canada
BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to identify commercially important marine species an asset
  • Experience working as an At-Sea or Dockside Observer an asset
  • Post-secondary education in a related field an asset
WHAT ELSE?

The co-op term is from May 2025 to August 2025 working approximately 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, with some variability in hours.

The hourly wage for this co-op is $20.00 per hour plus 8.2% vacation and statutory pay.
