We create and deploy technology for commercial fishing vessels, at-sea observers and dockside monitors to collect data and report back to our clients. We also provide marine environmental services for clients up and down the west coast of Canada and the United States. We are seeking a motivated individual to join our Product Engineering team as a Product Specialist, focusing on developing innovative monitoring systems for global fisheries. The decisions made in the development of Electronic Monitoring systems for fisheries play a crucial role in determining how successful government and companies are in ensuring sustainable fishing practices, protecting endangered species, and combatting illegal fishing.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

This term position, hiring between September 2025 and May 2026, is being sought to support the R&D and production needs of our Light Integrated Monitoring Equipment (LIME) product line. In this role, a successful candidate is expected to:

  • Problem Solve: This role will work within our multidisciplinary product team, supporting the integration of new sensor technologies. A successful candidate may find themselves as the team expert within a given knowledge area at times. Technical problem-solving skills are essential to success in this role.
  • Manage Knowledge: This role will require excellent documentation and knowledge management. The successful candidate will be responsible for disseminating key knowledge within the Product team, support software and hardware integration.
  • Monitor and Report on Key Metrics: Regular progress monitoring is a requirement of this role. This will take the form of work item tracking and through sprint-based planning. Beyond development, this role will be expected to support production of existing product and may be tasked with framing and monitoring ROI where process improvements are identified.
  • Support Strategic Initiatives: In addition to supporting the LIME product, this role will be tasked as appropriate to support Archipelago’s broader product suite. This includes exciting initiatives including edge deployed computer vision systems supporting small-scale and artisanal fishers around the world!

WHAT DO YOU OFFER?

  • Bachelor’s degree in (or coursework in support of) Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering, or a related field. Engineering technologists and individuals with backgrounds in applied marine sciences are also encouraged to apply
  • Familiarity with CAD tools for electrical and mechanical design. PCB design experience is beneficial.
  • Understanding of IoT protocols, relative costs and applications thereof: Our stack includes Bluetooth devices, 4G/5G and Starlink connectivity leveraging MQTT messaging protocols.
  • Strong technical support and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Ability to travel as required for client support and market research

BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in a product development environment
  • Work experience within the Marine Technology or Marine Environmental Monitoring industries
  • Co-op work experience in any technical field

WHAT ELSE?

The position is based on a 37.5-hour work week – Monday to Friday.

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $28 and $40 per hour. This role is an 8-month term position for the period September 2025 through May 2026. Students seeking co-op experience are encouraged to apply.
