Position Summary: We are hiring a Biologist I or Biologist II position in the Animal Care department, depending on the candidate’s previous work experience, working principally on the River Otter Team. Responsibilities are primarily North American river otters and include, but are not limited to, behavioral training, feeding, cleaning and diet preparation. Additionally, this position involves maintaining electronic records, public speaking, SCUBA diving and working with invertebrates, fishes and other animals in the Aquarium’s collection. This position reports to the Director and Associate Director of Animal Care. This position supervises: May supervise volunteers.PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Regular, reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.- 8-hour shifts; work week will be Sunday–Thursday or Tuesday–Saturday.- Adherence to all organizational policies and procedures including attendance, uniform, and grooming standards.- Daily cleaning of exhibits and holding spaces associated with our North American river otter population.- Daily free-contact training sessions with our otters; present a daily talk for guests with training sessions.- May be asked to manage projects including water quality, jelly culturing, amphibian/reptile/small mammal care, food acquisition and preparation, animal collection and vessel maintenance projects.- Monitor animal health, water quality, life support equipment, maintenance and display aesthetics of exhibits.- Develop and prepare diets; administer medical treatments to mammals, fishes and invertebrates.- Drive company vehicle for collection and transport of live animals; CA Driver’s License and insurance required.- Collect live animals; maintain animal care and transport equipment.- SCUBA dive in displays and for collecting; accredited dive association-certified and current CPR required.QUALIFICATIONS include: ability to problem-solve independently; initiative and attention to detail; experience with life support equipment; understanding of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement; ability to administer medical treatments; familiarity with water quality; ability to train and assist less experienced staff; maintain electronic animal care data. Position specifics: This is a full-time, non-exempt position; pay will range between $24–$28/hr depending on position and experience; evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime may be required.
